What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that is placed over a damaged or decayed tooth to restore its shape, size, strength, and appearance. It fully encases the visible portion of the tooth above the gumline and is held in place with a strong dental adhesive.

Crowns are commonly used to protect weakened teeth, cover large fillings, restore broken or worn teeth, support dental bridges, or cover dental implants. They can be made from various materials, including metal alloys or a dental porcelain, for a natural appearance.

What is a dental bridge?

A dental bridge is a fixed dental restoration used to replace one or more missing teeth. It's called a bridge because it, quite literally, bridges the gap created by missing teeth. The bridge consists of one or more artificial teeth which are held in place by dental crowns on either side. These crowns are cemented onto the teeth adjacent to the gap, anchoring the bridge securely in place.

Dental crowns and bridges - what to expect

Dental crown treatment involves several steps, with your dentist first preparing the tooth by removing any damaged portions and shaping it to fit the crown. Impressions of the prepared tooth are taken to create your custom-made crown. Once ready, the permanent crown is cemented onto the prepared tooth and your dentist will ensure it fits properly, making adjustments as needed for comfort and alignment. Finally, the crown is polished to match the appearance of your natural teeth.

Treatment for a dental bridge involves your dentist examining the teeth surrounding the gap to ensure they are healthy and strong enough to support the bridge. The adjacent teeth are prepared by reshaping them to accommodate dental crowns and impressions of the teeth and the gap taken to create your custom-made bridge. Once ready, it is cemented onto the prepared teeth, filling the gap and restoring your smile.

Frequently asked questions

about crowns and bridges at My E20 Dentist
How long does the treatment take from start to finish?

Most crowns and bridges are completed over 2 to 3 appointments across a few weeks. The first visit is the longer one, where the tooth or teeth are prepared and impressions are taken. The lab then makes your crown or bridge, which usually takes around 2 weeks. You'll come back to have it fitted at your next appointment, with a final check that everything feels right.

How long is each appointment?

The first preparation appointment usually lasts between 60 and 90 minutes. The fitting appointment is shorter, typically 30 to 60 minutes, focused on placement and any small adjustments.

How much do crowns and bridges cost?

The cost depends on the material chosen and how many teeth are being treated. Porcelain, zirconia and metal options all sit at different price points. You'll receive a clear, written quote at your consultation, and 0% finance is available for treatment over £1,000 to help spread the cost.

Which material is best for me?

It depends on where the tooth is and what you want from the result. Porcelain and zirconia crowns are excellent for visible front teeth because they blend in naturally. Metal or porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns are strong, hardwearing options often used on back teeth where strength matters more than appearance. Your dentist will recommend the right material for your tooth at your consultation.

How long do crowns and bridges last?

A well-made crown can last 10 to 15 years or longer with good care. Bridges typically last 5 to 15 years, with the same factors affecting longevity (oral hygiene, diet, and avoiding habits like grinding or biting hard objects). Regular check-ups and hygiene appointments are key to getting the longest life out of either.

Can I spread the cost of my treatment?

We offer 0% APR payment plans for treatments over £500. You can spread the cost over up to 12 months, making it easier to manage your dental care expenses. Speak to one of our team members for further information.

Will the procedure hurt?

No. Your dentist will use a local anaesthetic to numb the area before any preparation, so you stay comfortable throughout. Most patients describe the experience as no different to having a filling. Some mild sensitivity afterwards is normal and settles quickly.

What are the risks of crowns and bridges?

Crowns and bridges are well-established, safe treatments, but there are a few things to be aware of. Some tooth structure has to be removed to fit a crown, which is permanent. Mild sensitivity to hot and cold is common in the first few weeks after fitting. With bridges, the teeth on either side of the gap are prepared and crowned to support the bridge, which means healthy teeth are involved in the treatment. Your dentist will go through all the risks and alternatives in detail at your consultation so you can make an informed decision.

Should I have a bridge or a dental implant?

Both are good options for replacing missing teeth, and the right choice depends on your case. A bridge is quicker (a few weeks) and doesn't involve surgery, but relies on the teeth either side of the gap. A dental implant takes longer (3 to 6 months) and involves a minor surgical procedure, but it preserves your neighbouring teeth and protects the jawbone underneath the gap from shrinking. Your dentist will explain the pros and cons of each at your consultation.

How do I look after my crown or bridge?

Look after a crown like a natural tooth, brushing twice a day and flossing daily. For bridges, special floss or interdental brushes are needed to clean underneath the bridge where it sits over the gum, as bacteria can build up there. Avoid biting hard foods or using your teeth as tools, and keep up with regular hygiene appointments to spot any small issues early.

Will my crown look natural?

Yes. Porcelain and zirconia crowns are made to match the shape, size and colour of your other teeth so the result blends in seamlessly. Dr Mitran is particularly meticulous about this, especially on front teeth, and most patients say even close friends and family can't tell which tooth has been crowned.
